'Starting therapy and seeing the impact of positive changes was wonderful, not only because it felt like I was slowly getting my life back, but it showed me something I had never thought possible - that you can heal the trauma from s*xual abuse. The journey... was so beautifully freeing that it empowered me to continue the hard work of facing my own trauma and helping others heal theirs.' - Dr. Jem Tosh CPsychol AFBPsS RCC 'S*xual Abuse and Surviving with(in) Psychology' published in #MeToo: Counsellors and Psychotherapists Speak About S*xual Violence and Abuse (2020). Welcome! My name is Dr. Jem Tosh (they/she) I am a Doctor of Psychology, a therapist, an educator, consultant, and an award-winning researcher and author. I specialise in the psychology of gender, sexuality, violence, abuse, and trauma. I provide therapies that I have personally encountered during my own healing journey. I combine this knowledge from direct lived experience with an extensive career in research and years of working in a variety of clinical settings, to provide a deep and comprehensive understanding of violence, abuse, trauma, and healing. I use a non-pathologising, anti-oppressive, and affirming approach that is trauma-centred. I analyse trauma responses as functional behaviours developed for survival, and work with clients to adapt or reduce responses that have become difficult or harmful over time. This includes a wide range of responses, such as flashbacks, nightmares, dissociation, insomnia, anxiety, low mood, and more. One of the difficulties of childhood trauma and/or sexual abuse is that we often don't realise they are impacting us today. So those recurring issues that are preventing you from living a full and happy life, that you don't seem able to break free from, come and have a chat with me about them and let's heal your past so that you can thrive in the present . Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society Full Member of the Canadian Psychological Association Registered Clinical Counsellor in British Columbia Member of EMDR Canada and EMDRIA PhD in Psychology, Manchester Metropolitan University Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherap y, Regents University London BSc Psychology, First Class Honours, University of Liverpool, Chester College Book Now Jem's competence, compassion, and affirming care have helped me to experience breakthroughs in our sessions that have been truly transformative in healing complex trauma. I'm feeling less anxious and reactive, and more confidant - in a far shorter time than the many years I've spent in other therapeutic contexts. I cannot overstate the extent to which Jem has helped me along in my healing journey! - Therapy Client Areas of Expertise: (please note that you may find this list triggering) S*xual A buse , including: childhood s*xual abuse, inc*st, drug facilitated s*xual abuse, s*xual abuse that has occurred in medical settings, s*xual abuse in romantic relationships, revenge p*rn (the nonconsensual sharing of s*xual images or videos), deepfake revenge p*rn (the nonconsensual creation and sharing of fake s*xual images and videos), s*xual assault by strangers, s*xual harassment and assault in the workplace, s*xual assault involving multiple perpetrators , 'corrective' r*pe (s*xual abuse that targets a person's gender and/or sexuality). Violence and abuse: domestic violence, emotional abuse, physical abuse, financial abuse, bullying and harassment, bullying in the workplace, reparative abuse (e.g. forcing an individual to perform a different gender or sexuality), social exclusion and/or abuse targeting a person's identity. Intersecting issues: Managing trauma responses (e.g. dissociation, flashbacks, nightmares, anger, people pleasing), gender dysphoria as a survivor of s*xual abuse, untangling sexuality from sexual trauma, neurodivergent people's experiences of abuse, trauma, and healing. I nclusive and Affirming Practice: I work with clients from a range of different relationship structures, such as monogamous and polyamorous relationships, and sexualities, such as heterosexuality, bisexuality, and asexuality. I work with survivors of all genders. For family members, partners, and loved ones of queer, trans, and nonbinary people , I recommend booking a consultation with me rather than therapy, as the focus is predominantly psychoeducational (i.e providing information and answering questions in a supportive space). Consent: Consent is central to my work and my experience as a survivor of violence and abuse. I do not work with perpetrators or those involved in the perpetration of nonconsensual relationships. I can't believe how quickly I saw results after starting therapy for my imposter syndrome . It used to take me hours to read a paper and I would be exhausted after every assignment. Jem explained that this was because I was trying to push through my trauma responses. We did one session of EMDR and I saw the change immediately. After the session I completed the biggest assignment I have ever done and got the best result of my academic career. It feels like my career is on a whole new trajectory now . Jem knew exactly which memory to target for the biggest impact. I can't thank them enough. - Therapy Client My Approach As a discourse analyst, I have a keen appreciation of the importance of language in processing trauma and the effectiveness of narrative-based therapies. I also incorporate therapies that help heal the embodied trauma of violence and abuse, and neuropsychological reprocessing of traumatic memories (such as via eye movements /EMDR and memory work). My focus is on healing the underlying trauma, going beyond talking therapies, to neutralise triggers, reduce nightmares, and make being in your body feel safe again (or for the first time). I have dedicated my career to advocating and supporting survivors of all genders - including cisgender and transgender men and women, as well as nonbinary and intersex people. I work to create awareness about different kinds of (often under-reported) perpetrators, such as women who s*xually abuse. I also consider the important role of context and power in working with survivors of abuse, and have researched s*xual abuse cases that are often dismissed because of where they occurred, such as s*xual abuse in medical settings, as we ll as the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, class, and disability and experiences of violence and abuse. Want to know more about my research? If you want therapy in the comfort and privacy of your own home, I offer face-to-face video calls that are end-to-end encrypted and provide the highest level of privacy recommended by cybersecurity experts. I also provide additional guidance on how to make the most of your virtual sessions. I think this very much separates Jem from most clinicians. Jem takes steps that are far beyond average and more than the vast majority of people working in this sector. - Alexis Fabricius Researcher of Women's Health and Digital Technologies University of Guelph I a m a queer, nonbinary, neurodivergent, Irish immigrant. • Resources | psygentra

Resources Psygentra Therapy Visual Resources Auditory Resources Physical Resources Downloads Extra Resouces for Clients More We all have different ways that we relax or can calm ourselves, and what works for one person may not work for another. Some of us are very visual and can visualise all kinds of wonderful and calming images, others find sounds and auditory information have a much bigger impact. Some folks find that they process information and can tap into their emotions better through their body and somatic exercises. Here you will find resources that you can use between sessions to manage triggers and overwhelming emotions. If some don't work for you, try ones with a different focus. For example, if guided visualisations are difficult for you to do, try listening to affirmations or doing some tapping instead. Visual Resources Visual Resources The Container Exercise: Can be used when you are currently experiencing stress or emotions that feel overwhelming, 'too big', or uncomfortable. It is a temporary measure to reduce the feelings, make them more manageable, and allows for you to come back to them at another time. Helpful for after therapy sessions, difficult conversations, spending time in toxic environments, after a long day at work, and so on. (Video script from The Personal Transformation Institute) Safe Space Pendulation Exercise: This exercise can help build tolerance for the physical sensations and feelings that can come with trauma and stress. For those that use distraction, numbing, and dissociation as main coping strategies, practicing how to tolerate mild irritations for a brief period of time, and learning how to quickly move yourself away from uncomfortable sensations, can be useful skills to build resilience and help you in your healing journey as we process traumatic memories. This guided visualisation uses slow bilateral tapping (EMDR) to help connect your visualisation and calmness to a single word so that you can 'trigger' this relaxing state by simply using the word in stressful situations. Slowly tap the tops of your legs, or knees, or your shoulders. Tap one at a time (like we do in session). Remember to go slow to encourage feelings of relaxation as going too fast can activate trauma memories. If experiencing these sensations is too intense for you, stop the exercise. If anything negative comes up during or after the tapping, stop the exercise. (Script developed by Dr. Jem Tosh based on Personal Transformation Institute original concept). Healing Light Exercise: Can be used for relaxation after a period of overwhelm, chronic illness flare up or pain, or just when it feels like it would be helpful to spend a few minutes focusing on your body and/or mind's healing. If focusing on bodily sensations or being 'in' your body feels distressing or triggering, skip this resource. (Video script by Dr. Jem Tosh) Loving Cat Meditation: Lots of people find being around cats comforting and relaxing, and have pets as emotional support animals. If you find spending time with animals healing, you may enjoy this cat meditation that focuses on feeling comforted, loved, and not alone. This video may be triggering or emotional for you if you sometimes feel lonely or unloved. You can check the transcript below before listening for potentially triggering content. (Video script by Dr. Jem Tosh) Transcript: Auditory Resources Auditory Resources Affirmations for PhD Students: Doing a PhD can be tough. Not only is it a lot of work, but sometimes students don't get the support they need, or all that 'constructive criticism' starts to feel like a never-ending loop of not being good enough. Here are some things that you should be hearing regularly from those around you as you study, research, and write your thesis. This short video can be useful for things like after a difficult meeting with a supervisor, getting negative feedback on your thesis or a paper you've submitted, when you feel fed up with your project, and so on. You might also like to join our virtual Reading and Research Group - it's a very supportive space for people at all stages of their career. This video may be triggering or emotional for you if you have waited a long time to hear these things being said to you. You can check the transcript below before listening for potentially triggering content. (Video script by Dr. Jem Tosh) Transcript: Physical Resources Physical Resources Cross Crawl Grounding Exercise: This physical movement can help when you get triggered and/or when you are finding it difficult to be present. It can be particularly useful for those who dissociate or struggle to visualise. Used regularly it can also help with memory and learning in general, or when you feel 'stuck' on a task. Some have found it to be useful for neurodivergent processing difficulties. Dr. Hannaford, author of Smart Moves , uses it when she experiences writer's block! Butterfly Hug: This is one of the first things I teach my clients for managing overwhelming emotions and being triggered (or when your trauma memories are being activated by your current situation/environment). Like EMDR, it engages bilateral stimulation (BLS), but rather than tapping quickly for reprocessing, you tap slowly to calm down and relax. If the idea of slowing down feels uncomfortable to you, or you sense resistance to it, this can be because your fight/flight is on and needs to be switched off first. For this, I recommend covering your dominant eye for a few moments BEFORE starting tapping (covering your dominant eye is an OEI technique that I introduce in your first counselling session, and in my opinion, it is the most effective method at stopping a trigger in its tracks). If the Butterfly Hug doesn't appeal to you, any form of slow bilateral stimulation can be effective - like going for a gentle stroll because each leg moves one at a time, so it's a form of BLS.
